Introduction to My Health Journey

Welcome to Part 5 of my ongoing health journey where I explore the profound effects of functional medicine on my autoimmune disorder, specifically uveitis. Over the past six months, I have delved deeply into dietary adjustments and holistic practices, all aiming to enhance my well-being and manage my symptoms more effectively.

Consulting a Rheumatologist

About two months into my health journey, I had the opportunity to meet with a rheumatologist. This medical professional was exceptionally knowledgeable and took the time to conduct extensive testing. The goal was to uncover potential underlying causes of my uveitis. Considering the complexity of autoimmune disorders, my results were somewhat ambiguous; I found myself in what is often referred to as the 'gray area.' There were no distinct markers indicating a well-known autoimmune disorder.

Fortunately, one of the most promising outcomes of my consultations was the lack of recurrent inflammation. My rheumatologist, after reviewing my case, knowing I was also working with a Functional Medicine Practitioner and my dietary changes, suggested that we hold off on autoimmune suppressants, a treatment I was eager to avoid. His guidance reassured me that my proactive measures were making a difference.

The Steps I Took Until My 6 Months Checkup

From end of June 2024 through February 2025 (6 month check up with all my specialists) I've embarked on a transformative journey to improve my health and well-being. Here are the key steps I took:

1. Going Gluten-Free

The first significant change was eliminating gluten from my diet. Initially, this seemed daunting, but the positive effects on my health were undeniable. Not only did I notice improvements related to my uveitis, but my overall inflammation levels decreased as well.

2. Saying Goodbye to Alcohol

About three weeks after going gluten-free, my Functional Medicine Practitioner cut out alcohol from diet. This was particularly challenging during the summer, as I envisioned cocktails by the pool or a cozy campfire. Fortunately, my incredibly supportive partner joined me in going alcohol-free, which made it much easier to stay committed.

3. Embracing a Dairy-Free Lifestyle

Two months into my dietary changes, next recommendation from my Practitioner is to go dairy-free. While dining out and cooking gluten-free at home was manageable, dairy-free proved to be more difficult. Finding suitable substitutions and realizing how many foods contain dairy was tough, but I persevered. Holidays were especially challenging, but after several attempts, I found comfort foods that made me feel like I wasn't missing out.

A Holistic Approach to Nutrition

These dietary changes are part of a broader strategy that includes a mindful approach to nutrition and lifestyle. I focused on incorporating more whole foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats while eliminating processed foods whenever possible. This holistic approach aims to nourish my body, support my immune system, and mitigate symptoms related to my autoimmune condition.

The Importance of Support

Support has been crucial throughout this journey. Connecting with healthcare professionals, friends, my incredible partner has been invaluable. Sharing experiences with others facing similar challenges has provided encouragement, resources, and practical tips for managing autoimmune disorders.

6-Month Check-Up: A Milestone Achievement

Reaching my 6-month check-up with my eye specialist and rheumatologist without a flare-up was remarkable. Was I still nervous? Absolutely, maybe my eyes were no longer giving me warning signs? Did something change? Could this actually be working? These were all thoughts going through my head.

Hearing my eye specialist say, "no inflammation" was music to my ears. I could have cried tears of joy when he scheduled my next appointment for six months later—a milestone I hadn't reached in almost three years!

Sharing this incredible news with my rheumatologist brought the same verdict. All my hard work and dedication to my diet had paid off. I remained steroid and autoimmune suppressant-free, a testament to the effectiveness of my lifestyle changes.

Embarking on this journey has been challenging but incredibly rewarding. Each step has brought me closer to better health and a more balanced lifestyle. If you're considering similar changes, remember that support and perseverance are key.
