Gluten‑Free Adventures in Wichita

January kicked off with a milestone I’ll never forget—Cristian’s very first invite to the U.S. Figure Skating National Development Camp, held in Wichita, Kansas. As a proud skating mom, this trip meant a lot: new experiences, new opportunities for my son and his skating partner, and of course… new places to eat that fit my gluten‑ and dairy‑free lifestyle. Gluten‑Free Adventures in Wichita: Cristian’s First U.S. Figure Skating National Development Camp (January 2025)

January kicked off with a milestone I’ll never forget—Cristian and his skating partner Scarlet very first invite to the U.S. Figure Skating National Development Camp, held in Wichita, Kansas. As a proud skating mom, this trip meant a lot: new experiences, new opportunities for my son and his skating partner, and of course… new places to eat that fit my gluten‑ and dairy‑free lifestyle.

Traveling with food restrictions isn’t always easy, but Wichita surprised me in the best way.

Navigating Gluten‑ and Dairy‑Free Travel—Wichita Edition

I’m always mentally preparing before a trip—researching menus, checking allergen options, and keeping emergency snacks on hand. But Wichita made it easier than I expected. The food scene is approachable, flavorful, and, most importantly, willing to accommodate dietary needs.

Here are the places that truly stood out:

Meddy’s West — "Fast Food" Mediterranean Done Right

One of the biggest highlights was Meddy’s West.
Fresh Mediterranean flavors… helpful staff… and so many naturally gluten‑ and dairy‑free options? Yes, please!

The food was vibrant and satisfying—exactly the kind of meal I crave when traveling. It’s the type of place I wish existed back home because everything tasted clean, delicious, and thoughtfully prepared.

Blue Fin — Sushi That Hits the Spot

Another gem.
Sushi restaurants can be risky with food sensitivities, but the team here was incredibly accommodating. They took the time to review ingredients and recommend safe options, which made me feel truly cared for. They pointed out items I ordered that I didn't realize had gluten in them!

If you’re gluten‑free and love sushi, put this one on your list.

Outback Steakhouse — The Reliable Classic

Sometimes simplicity wins.
After long camp days, Outback was the perfect go‑to. A straightforward steak with clean sides is always a safe and satisfying option. The staff was attentive about cross‑contamination and made the experience stress‑free.

Travel tip for fellow allergy parents: don’t underestimate the comfort of a familiar chain that knows how to handle dietary restrictions.

Camp Life: Watching the Future of Skating Take Shape

While Wichita had plenty to explore, this trip was all about the kids.
I was completely fascinated watching Cristian and his partner jump into camp classes, drills, and coaching sessions. As parents, we even had our own sessions—giving us a peek into the expectations, goals, and future path for our young athletes.

It’s amazing to see the behind‑the‑scenes effort that goes into building strong, confident skaters. I found myself captivated, learning, observing, and imagining what the next few years might bring.

A Sweet Reunion & Local Favorites I Loved

One of my favorite parts of the trip?
Getting to reconnect with an old friend and former co‑worker who knows Wichita like a local. She took me to some of her must‑visit spots—places I might never have found on my own.

Nifty Nut House

This place is snack heaven.
Wall‑to‑wall candy, nuts, chocolates, and cute displays everywhere you turn. Whether you love sweets or just want a unique foodie stop, it’s an absolute delight.

The Spice Merchant

If you’re a tea lover, prepare yourself.
The tea selection is unreal—aromas, blends, accessories, and spices from all over the world. I could’ve stayed for hours. This is definitely on my “must return” list.

Final Thoughts

We didn’t explore as much as we usually do on trips—and honestly? I didn’t mind one bit. My heart was full watching Cristian chase his skating dreams, learning more about the sport, and discovering a few Wichita treasures along the way.

If you’re traveling gluten‑free, dairy‑free, or with young athletes, Wichita might surprise you.
From accommodating restaurants to adorable local spots, it made our January trip both meaningful and delicious.
