Another year of high school figure skating competitions has come to a close, and it has been nothing short of exceptional. The Northern Mounties have once again showcased their talent and skills, successfully defending their title this season. While we couldn't attend all the competitions, I was fortunate enough to witness some incredible performances.
One highlight of the season was when C and his coaches put together a new showcase program. It was a delight to watch my son bring Freddie Mercury to the ice, adding a unique and captivating element to his performance. Last year's showcase program, featuring Michael Buble's "Feeling Good" (my all time fav!) was transformed into his Novice/Junior free skate program, showcasing his growth and versatility as a skater.
In addition to the individual performances, the coaches also brought back some beloved group routines. For the duet, we revived the spirit of "Grease," with its iconic songs and energetic choreography. This nostalgic choice was a hit among the audience, who couldn't help but sing along and tap their feet. And for the trio routine, we brought back the magic of "Aladdin," a fan favorite that never fails to enchant both young and old.
Attending these competitions has been quite a journey, as we traveled from the Cape, New Hampshire, and even Maine to support our skaters. The excitement and anticipation in the air, the camaraderie among the participants, and the cheers from the crowd created a vibrant atmosphere that will be truly missed. Especially the camaraderie, not just the skaters but the parents too! High school competitions are all day events. Most singular competitions, skaters don't have the opportunity to hang out and cheer for their fellow skaters. These competitions has allowed these skaters to truly get to know each other off the ice.
As this marks C's final year in high school figure skating competitions, there is a bittersweet feeling in the air. Watching him grow and excel in this sport has been a source of immense pride and joy. The memories created during these competitions will be cherished for years to come.
While this chapter may be coming to an end, the world of figure skating continues to offer new opportunities and adventures. C plans to pursue skating at a higher level in pairs, but the lessons learned and the passion developed through these high school competitions will undoubtedly shape his future. As we bid farewell to the 2023-2024 high school figure skating competition in Maine, we can't help but reflect on the incredible talent, dedication, and hard work displayed by all the skaters. Congratulations to the Northern Mounties for their outstanding performance, and best wishes to all the skaters as they continue their journey on the ice.
