Introduction to Postcard Cabins
Tucked away in the quiet woods of Connecticut, the Postcard Cabin offered the perfect winter escape for our romantic getaway. From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the cabin’s minimalist charm and thoughtful design. Its signature feature—a large picture window—framed the untouched wilderness like a living painting, making it easy to forget that neighbors were anywhere nearby.
The cabin embraces the beauty of small-space living, with clean lines, warm wood tones, and an open layout that invites you to slow down and savor the moment. One of our favorite touches was the cell phone lockbox—a gentle nudge to unplug and be present. And it worked. Visitors can enjoy intimate evenings by the firepit, scenic walks through the woods, and stargazing under clear night skies—all of which contribute to the allure of a Postcard Cabin experience.
A Perfect Weekend Escape
This weekend away was exactly what we needed—a quiet, cozy retreat just for the two of us. Tucked into the peaceful woods of Connecticut, the Postcard Cabin welcomed us with its warm, rustic charm and minimalist design.
One of the most memorable features was the large window in the living area, perfectly framing the surrounding forest. Our bed was positioned right up against it, so we spent our mornings lounging under the covers, watching the trees sway gently in the breeze and the soft light shift through the branches. It felt like we were wrapped in nature, yet completely comfortable and at peace.
We didn’t rush. We stayed in bed, talked, laughed, and simply enjoyed the stillness. The quiet moments felt extra special—just the two of us, no distractions, no schedule. A light dusting of snow during our stay made everything even more magical, turning the woods into a winter postcard.
This little cabin gave us more than just a break from the everyday—it gave us space to reconnect, reflect, and enjoy the simple joy of being together.
Discovering Local Gems: Gillette Castle
One of the highlights of our visit was exploring the nearby Gillette Castle in East Haddam. Unfortunately, the castle was closed at the time of our visit but we were greeted by a delightful retired teacher that loved sharing his knowledge of this remarkable building. This stunning landmark, which resembles a medieval fortress, was designed by the celebrated actor William Gillette, famous for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. The architecture of the castle stands out for its unique use of local sandstone and varied, intricate design features that reflect both the dramatic aesthetics of the time and Gillette's creative vision.
The history of Gillette Castle is as intriguing as its exterior. Constructed between 1914 and 1919, the castle served not only as a personal residence but also as a venue for entertaining friends and family. The castle was also commandeered by the state of Connecticut in the 1940s, transforming it into a historic site for future generations to appreciate.
Surrounding the castle, the picturesque grounds further enhance its charm. We enjoyed wandering along the well-maintained trails, which offer serene views of the Connecticut River and the rolling hills beyond. The expansive gardens and sweeping landscapes invite visitors to take leisurely strolls, providing ample opportunity for photographs.
In the end, our visit to Gillette Castle was not merely an exploration of a historic landmark; it was a journey into the vibrant history of Connecticut and an enriching experience that complemented our romantic getaway.
Culinary Delights: Vegan Restaurant Adventures
Traveling with food restrictions can make dining out difficult. During our romantic getaway in Connecticut, we found ourselves drawn to ION vegan restaurant nestled in Middletown. This culinary spot promised not just food, but an experience that would enhance our weekend retreat. Upon arrival, the vibrant atmosphere greeted us, filled with the aromas of herbs and spices wafting through the air. The establishment was adorned with green plants and eclectic decor, which created a welcoming and serene backdrop for our dining experience.
As we explored the menu, we were thrilled by the innovative and diverse options. Our culinary adventure kicked off with a scrumptious nachos dish and a comforting bowl of loaded baked potato soup. The main course featured mouthwatering pasta dishes that left us both satisfied and with plenty of leftovers. Though we had no room for dessert, we couldn't resist taking home a tempting peanut butter chocolate pie for later indulgence. Each bite was a testament to the chef's expertise in crafting dishes that appeal not only to health-conscious diners but also to those seeking an explosion of flavors.
Following our meal, we meandered through Old Wethersfield, to Heirloom Market where we discovered quaint shops offering seeds and natural snacks. This excursion added a unique touch to our trip, emphasizing the charm of the area and the interconnectedness of food and place. The blend of flavors and local charm during our visit truly enriched our romantic getaway, leaving us with lasting memories.
Our Journey Home
On our way back to Rhode Island, we decided to take our time and explore a few spots along the route. One of the most intriguing stops was Seaside State Park, where we wandered the quiet trails alongside the hauntingly beautiful, now-abandoned Seaside Sanitorium. The eerie atmosphere made it feel like we’d stepped into another world.
From there, we headed to Mystic for a bite to eat and some exploring. We grabbed some delicious seafood at Red 36—fresh, flavorful, and right by the water—before strolling through the charming shops of Olde Mistick Village. It was the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation before the final stretch home.
