Theatre on Ice Nationals Took Us to Allen, Texas—And We Found a Gluten‑Free Foodie Paradise!

When Theatre on Ice Nationals brought us to Allen, Texas, I honestly didn’t know what to expect. But this trip surprised us in the BEST way. From allergy‑friendly eats to family activities, pampering, and plenty of exploring, Allen and Dallas delivered big time.

Whether you're in town for a competition, a weekend getaway, or a short layover, here’s how we made the most of our adventure—with gluten-free and dairy-free options at every stop.

Dallas Day 1 Itinerary: A Perfect Half-Day Adventure

If you’ve only got a few hours in Dallas, don’t worry—you can still cover plenty of highlights without feeling rushed.

Arrival + Parking

We landed midday, grabbed our rental car, and found easy parking at a nearby downtown garage. From there, everything was super walkable, even with the Texas heat challenging us.

First Stop: Wild Salsa

Huge win for allergy-friendly eats! We found @wildsalsarestaurant through a gluten-free app, and it ended up being one of our favorite finds in Dallas. They were incredibly attentive to allergies—accommodating my son’s seafood allergy and my gluten-free requirements with no stress at all.

✔️ Flavor-packed food
✔️ Allergy-aware staff
✔️ Fun atmosphere

Highly recommend for families navigating dietary restrictions.

Quick Stops You Can’t Miss in Downtown Dallas

Here’s everything we squeezed into our short adventure:

Thanks-Giving Square

A calm, reflective oasis amidst the city. Perfect for a peaceful moment.

The Giant Eyeball

A quirky, iconic photo op—because what’s a trip without a weird landmark?

AT&T Discovery District

Lawn games, food, a lively atmosphere. Great spot to rest, snack, or let the kids burn some energy.

Pioneer Plaza

Home of the famous cattle drive sculptures—massive, unforgettable, and such a cool look at Texas history.

JFK Memorial + Grassy Knoll

A powerful stop, especially for older kids who’ve learned the history in school.

Reunion Tower

We ended our day with panoramic views of Dallas. Sunset here = chef’s kiss.

Surviving the Texas Heat

Some real talk: the heat is no joke.

✔️ Hydrate nonstop
✔️ Find shade whenever you can
✔️ Frozen Dr Pepper = lifesaver

By nighttime, my feet were DONE… but the day was absolutely worth it.

Allen: Our Favorite Allergy‑Friendly Eats

Back in Allen, we discovered even more spots that made the trip feel like a foodie win:

Rudy’s BBQ

Don’t let the “gas station” look fool you.
This isn’t gas station food — it’s insanely good Texas BBQ.
We loved it so much we went back more than once.

Hawaiian Bros

This one hits deep.
Growing up on the “9th island” (Las Vegas), Hawaiian food is comfort at its finest—and living in New England, I hardly ever get it.

So when we found Hawaiian Bros in Allen, my heart just about burst.

🌺 5 happy food dance wiggle stars! 🌺
This is REAL local-style Hawaiian food.
Authentic flavors. Generous portions. Pure joy.

If you know, you know… and if you don’t, this is your sign to try it.

Original Chop Shop

Fresh, fast, allergy-friendly, and walking distance from our hotel.
Perfect for competition days or quick meals.

Things to do:

Rose Couture Nail Bar — A Total Win for My Aching Feet

We found Rose Couture Nail Bar thanks to another TikTok creator, and THANK GOODNESS we did. After walking all over Dallas the day before, my feet were screaming for mercy. And wow… this place was heaven.

The guys even joined me, and they were into it.
We all got pedicures with a hot stone massage, plus a complimentary drink.

The vibe: all pink, roses, glam, and total girly‑girl energy.
The service: top-tier.
The relaxation: unmatched.

If you’re in Allen—solo, with friends, or with your partner—this is a must‑do self‑care stop.

Chicken N Pickle in Allen, TX

Another fun find!
We didn’t get to try the pickleball courts this time, but honestly? There’s so much else to do that we didn’t even miss it.

What We Did

✔️ Oversized outdoor games
✔️ Shuffleboard
✔️ Foosball
✔️ Fun indoor/outdoor hangout spaces

Perfect for families, teams, or a chill night out.

What We Ate: Gluten-free options were limited, but we grabbed tacos, guac, and deviled eggs—and everything was fresh and tasty.

The Hub

Live music. Need I say more?

Final Thoughts

Allen and Dallas surprised us in ALL the best ways—amazing food, fun attractions, and allergy-friendly options that made traveling as a mom so much easier.

If figure skating brings us back again? I’ll be packing my bags in a heartbeat.
